Terry
Johnson, an American Presbyterian minister, has provided a splendid
apologia for the doctrinal Protestantism on which we in the PTS
would take our stand along with many others. The chapter headings
speak for themselves: The Evangelical Faith, Sola Scriptural Solo
Christo, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Soli Deo Gloria. There is an appendix
of Protestant Confessional Documents on justification. The doctrinal treatment is superb, warming the heart of the believer
with humble love and gratitude to God, while presenting any unconverted
readers with a clear and powerful presentation of the way of salvation.
The outworking of this in a wide variety of areas is described
in the closing chapters, indicating the profound effect Protestantism
has had on western society. You may not agree with the author at
every point, and Cambridge is not a college (p.151), but this is
a book we would heartily commend. Read it yourself and give copies
to your friends. Gordon Murray |
