As
a young believer I well remember reading through Dr Marryn Lloyd-Jones'
Expository Sermons on 2 Peter. So it was with some interest that
this commentary on 2 Peter was placed into my hands. This particular
work includes also a look at Jude's Epistle.
It is not hard to see why the publishers have combined the second
letter of Peter with that of Jude. One need only read the two Epistles
side by side to see the striking similarities. Of course, Peter's
letter can well be said to be that of a believer who is drawing
near death (1:14). Here are his last words. He writes as a concerned
pastor. His intention is threefold: 1. To encourage spiritual growth,
2. To warn of false teaching, 3. To point their eyes heavenward
to the return of Jesus Christ. Jude, in similar vein, warns the
believers, after setting off initially to write a simple letter
on the wonders of the Christian faith, to "earnestly contend for the faith.
.. (v3)".
This book is very much a brief introduction to these Epistles.
The style of the writer is simple and easy to follow. This is
a good book to give to a young Christian or someone who knows
little or nothing of these Bible books. However, for the serious
Bible student who is looking for depth and detailed exposition,
you'll need to look elsewhere.
