WHY
do Protestants believe that so much important Roman Catholic teaching
cannot be accepted by those who love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity
and truth? This booklet is a brief examination of various key areas,
where Protestants believe Rome has tied herself in her formularies
to doctrines that are contrary to those taught in the Bible. These
differences are far more than mere questions about words-rather,
they cut to the very heart of what it is to be a Christian, to
have the hope of heaven, and to know peace with God through Jesus
Christ. DERMOT NASH writes from his own personal experience as
a former Roman Catholic. Born in Dublin in 1935, he was educated
by the Christian Brothers at St Vincent de Paul's School, Glasnevin,
Dublin. In September 1954 he applied to a religious order for admittance
to its noviciate, and studied for the Roman Catholic priesthood.
He left two years later, not having found the peace he sought.
He joined the Legion of Mary, and began to picket gospel meetings.
Through this he met a young Christian, who encouraged him to read
the Bible. He writes, "The more I read the Scriptures the
more confused I became, until one evening while reading John 10:27-28
the Holy Spirit enlightened my soul and I realised that I was not
a sheep of the fold of Jesus. On the evening of April 19th 1957
1 opened the Bible at John 10:27-28 and prayed that God would forgive
me my sins and give me the life that Jesus spoke about. A great
peace filled my soul as I poured out my heart before God and cried
to Him for mercy. The guilt, burden, and consciousness of my sin
just vanished away and for the first time in my life I knew what
it was to be in the presence of the Living God". He came to London the following year, and was
later called to the Pastorate of two successive churches in the
Essex area. In time he returned to secular employment, and continued
to preach in various churches. He runs an internet ministry,
www.in-understanding.org, aimed at helping Roman Catholics
who want to find out more about biblical doctrine. He
is a PTS Council member. |
