As
we are remember the 300th centenary of the birth of John Wesley
it is a good time to promote two books that the P.T. S. have printed.
The first is John Wesley's writings on Roman Catholicism (148
pp GBP3.25) This book deals with
a variety of subjects including Bigotry, Church Order, Superstition,
Faith and Works, Romes Aberrations, and the Papacy. The second
is entitled - A Roman Catechism with a reply There to (88pp GBP1.25)
This is a republication by Wesley of an earlier anonymous work
from the previous century but reprinted later in his own collected
works. Here, each Roman teaching in the catechism has a Protestant
response. The editor, as well as writing a useful Preface, has
added an appendix containing an extract from the Vatican II Dogmatic
Constitution od the Church.
While some may think that Wesley is over-generous at times to
individual Roman Catholics he is very clear on the fatal tendency
of the errors in Roman teaching. As well as being of interest to
ourselves these books might well be useful to give to Methodists,
including ministers, who are involved in the ecumenical movement. |
